Business Coach Cheat Sheet: The Best Questions To Ask

So you’ve found yourself a business coach/mentor, fantastic! You’ve taken the crucial first step towards business and personal development. A business coach has all the experience, expertise and know-how there just ready for you to unlock.

However, that is where the issue lies for many people. You’ve got your mentor, but how exactly do you unlock that much-needed knowledge? Which questions are the right questions to ask? This issue plagues many people in this position, and sometimes they need a helping hand to point them in the right direction.

As a business coach, I have been asked countless questions by my fantastic clients, and I want to share with you which questions allowed my clients to get the knowledge they needed from me. Asking the right question is critical to receiving the correct answer. In this article, I will show you my favourite questions that allowed my clients to hear the answers they needed.

Questions to ask

1. ‘How am I resistant to coaching?’

In a business coaching setting, those who are most willing to listen and change things that need to be changed succeed the most. Constructive criticism is a crucial skill that is very scarce in people. Listening to suggestions of change and taking them on board is a high-level skill to possess.

Often, it can take clients weeks, if not months, to stop letting their egos get in the way and listen to the feedback provided. One of the most incredible things that coaching and mentorship can give you is the ability to view your blind spots. Once you see and acknowledge this, you can progress and move forward with an action plan.

By asking this question, you can look at what may be holding you back and develop a plan with your coach to overcome this. This is an excellent starting point if you’re feeling stuck for questions.

2. ‘How would you define success?’

Success can have different meanings to everyone. Is success measurable? Is it a feeling you get? Understanding how your business coach defines success and how your definitions of success work around each other are essential.

If you understand your business coach’s definition of success, you can start to gain a better understanding of the direction that you’ll be heading together and the end goal they have in mind. If you don’t like the potential end goal, this can be a great question to use to develop a plan and end goal that works around your definition of success.

3. ‘How would you tell me I’m wrong?’

One of the best features of a good business coach is that they do not put your comfort ahead of what you want for yourself and your future. A business coach will highlight how your actions may hinder you from achieving the desired results.

These conversations can be uncomfortable, but they are necessary to help you develop and push toward your goals. A strong-minded business coach will spot your flaws and move you out of your comfort zone, further enabling you to grow.

You may disagree with what they are saying, but this is where you have to revert to question 1 in this list and allow yourself to be open to feedback. By doing this, you open up the coach-mentor relationship and allow yourself to develop further.

4. ‘How can I manage my work-life balance?’

In this world, the average person spends their professional life chasing deadlines, preparing presentations and looking toward the next meeting. While getting caught up in all this, most people forget to manage their personal life, which can get lost in the hubbub damaging an individual’s work-life balance

Both the work and non-work aspects of your life have vital importance, and managing them hand-in-hand can be crucial to your personal and professional development.

This is a vital aspect of your development for you and your business coach to work on. Naturally, people with a more controlled outlook on their personal life will have a much better grasp on their professional life. Make sure this question is on your list if you want significant growth and development.

5. ‘How will you help me define my success?’

As we have previously discussed, business coaches know what success is to them, as we all do. However, a great business coach will help you to mould your version of success into a tangible, achievable set of goals.

Clarifying what success you want for yourself and how you can achieve this is crucial, and asking this question allows you and your coach to sit down and plan out your route to success. These conversations will act as the long-term foundations for your progression plan and help build a positive coach-mentor relationship.

Asking a coach how they will help you define your success will also tell you a lot about how your plan will look and the direction you will go down together to achieve these goals.

6.  ‘How will you know if I’m the right client for you?’

It is often widely assumed that only the client chooses the right coach for them. However, a great business coach also knows which clients they can work best with and will choose the right clients they feel they can help progress and move forward the most.

Business coaches have methods to help their clients succeed, and they can decide whether their methods suit you. This question could also lead to a conversation about their ideal client and any deal-breakers they have with clients.

By going in-depth with these questions, you will learn a lot about your business coach, and they will get a chance to learn a lot about you. Make sure that you take notice of their answer, as this will help you collectively determine the best route to your success.

Conclusion

Business coaches are fountains of knowledge and expertise. The key to unlocking the potential of your coach-mentor relationship is to ask the right questions. If you ask the questions listed above, you will take a decisive step in the right direction toward your progression and success.
